Hard to beat an MX5 race car for driving fun. Epic day at the track with Dad and Everard yesterday.
Mum and Dad were down in Christchurch after a summer campervan holiday. With their visit lining up with a racecar test day it was the perfect change to give Dad a spin in the MX5s at Ruapuna.
He’s never driven this track (or this car) so I chucked on the sim the night before to try learn the layout. On the day we shared the car so Dad jumped in the passenger seat early on and I did my best to really send it and make an impression. Mission accomplished he was shocked how hard I was going xD and not so keen to do that again.
Dad hasn’t been on track since his spin at Pukekohe in 2022. Fair to say he was nervous getting back out there and not expecting much lap time wise. Awesome to see how much he improved over that day, especially once we worked out I’d stitched him up with gears for some corners. Oops sorry Dad.
We were both fizzing by the end of the day. So much fun. Now we might have to get Dad in the car for a race weekend? 👀
Eevee had to head off at midday which gave me the chance to get behind the wheel of his #64 car. And dang it that thing handled nice in the high speed. Sending it through link was a thrill, just barely lifting, something the #43 wasn’t capable of. I managed to go a full second faster with a 1:46.6. He did have new tyres vs the old ones on the #43 so maybe that’s part of it? Dang I might have to cough up for new tyres myself now.
So much fun getting back on track and hanging out in the pits. The cobwebs have now been shaken off ready for the four rounds of the Mazda MX-5 Heritage Cup Race Series starting next month 
Huge thanks to Garage 5 for use of the car once again. They even delivered and picked it up from the track so I got to feel like a rock star just arriving and driving without any work. That rock star feeling was taken to a new level with Mum and Dad having the campervan at the track too. Jumping in there to change into the race suit and to grab a drink from the fridge between drives was the ultimate pro driver vibes. Cosplaying as a pro is always a laugh. I was loving it!
